Chapter 17

Murali

Murali poured water into a steel container and put the utensil on a gas stove. He opened an instant upma packet, poured its contents into the boiling water, and waited for it to solidify. He hadn't eaten the upma (a food item made with coarse wheat flour) in breakfast for many days and his mouth watered as he stared at the contents.

The wall clock chimed indicating the time was eight-thirty. Another half an hour was left before he needed to be at the office.

Vikram wanted him to attend a half-day meeting session at Mysore. Murali had wished someone from his group to go, but Vikram needed him to go there as he was a group leader. Although Murali had initially refused, he eventually agreed. He didn't want to see his manager disappointed.

He switched off the stove and served himself a hot upma on a steel plate. He took a spoon, helped himself to curds, and then sat at the dining table.

Prakash had suggested he not delay proposing to Pratibha. Murali’s pulse quickened. He wanted to make use of his one-day Mysore trip to propose to her. He should invite her to join him; he would feel more confident to propose to her at Mysore, a picturesque spot.

What if she refused? What if she asked Simran to join her? Murali didn't want to lose the opportunity. He needed to convince her to accompany him. She had been compassionate towards him and had accompanied him to local restaurants. I'm sure Pratibha will not disappoint me.

He finished eating his breakfast and took his phone. He called Pratibha; she didn’t pick up her phone in the first few rings, but Murali waited patiently. He hadn't called her that early in the morning before.

“Good morning, Murali,” she answered, eventually.

Murali sighed in relief. “Hello, Pratibha. Good morning.”

“Is there any urgent matter to talk about?”

Murali didn't want to convey the message over the phone. It would be more effective to convince her in person. He cleared his throat. “Yes, I’ve something important to speak with you about.”

“What’s it?”

“Well-” Murali stumbled for words.

“Yes, tell me Murali. What’s it?”

He drew in a huge breath, gaining enough courage. “Can we speak over a cup of coffee at Starbucks?”

“Um...”

“I do have something important to talk about.”

“Okay,” she said after a prolonged silence.

Murali’s heart lightened. He straightened in his seat. “I’ll see you downstairs in five minutes.”

“But I can’t spare much time as I‘m busy with my household chores.” She sounded a bit annoyed.

Murali convinced her he wouldn't take much time.

He went to his bedroom and chose to wear a green mixed blue T-shirt and khaki corduroy pants. Standing in front of the mirror, he combed his black, silky hair and sprayed almond cologne on his T-shirt. He dressed, making sure everything was perfect before he walked out of his flat.

With his heart pounding in his ribcage, Murali waited near the parking lot for Pratibha to arrive. He shouldn’t have hastened to leave home so quickly because Pratibha would take more time to leave her flat.
